Osmany Caro Yulls

Artist

Osmany Caro Yulls

Osmany Caro Yulls, 1967

Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Osmany Caro’s work is mostly three-dimensional. His pieces are made from metals that have been thrown away and he turned that into art.  Being motivated by his visual art, Caro’s searching tireless for a new use for scrapmetal, as a strong statement for caring about the World environmental issues. He uses a broad topic, but mostly the fishes as a reference to our city (Cienfuegos, Cuba).
This beautiful little city by the sea, also flowers from those “ugly” rusty metals.
Caro, as a magician, transforms these “poco bonito” elements into beautiful flowers-sculptures. Putting these together and create something stunning.

Caro is not satisfied to just create beauty from ordinary elements, he also wants to bring his art close to people. This is exactly why part of it is very interactive and is challenging the idea of art as being something only for the rich and famous.

José Antonio Montes Espín

José Antonio Montes Espín

José Antonio Montes Espín (Pepe)

January 31rst, 1988

Cienfuegos, Cuba

Pepe is a self-taught artist who loves to leave his mark on the street, that’s why he can be qualified as a street artist which is a complicated matter in Cuba, maybe that’s the reason there are not so many. The symbolism of his work carried the heaviest part in his paintings, which he usually complements with some texts, that shows his interests in World peace, respect for women and for diversity in general. His work is linked to the Cuban hip hop movement, so it reflects the worries for our social issues and he has showed it by many graffiti that he has done.

He is a self taught artist who loves to paint about afro themes, it’s a way to reflect his identity as a afrocuban, his african heritage is explicit in his paintings, either by female or male subjects, also paints african markets, this is a common topic for rastafarian communities inAmerica, as a espiritual search for the past in order to legitimate as subjects based in a rich and long history.

Mario Velazquez

Mario Velazquez

Mario F. Velázquez Triana

November 10th, 1996

Cienfuegos, Cuba

He is a young self taught artists who barely 20 years old. His work, technically talking could be placed as figurative expressionism, his characters seem to be in endless feeling of uneasiness, it reminds to the famous art piece “The scream” by Eduard Munch. This kind of image might be not match with the sweetening official speech but this feeling of lack of space, of not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s not a particular feeling of this artist but a most common ground for Cuban youth.

About Legion Project

Graffiti is crucial in the Hip Hop culture. To be a graffiti artist in Cuba is very difficult because there is no place where you can get the supplies, usually have to go to the black market where prices are skyrocket. No only that, there is a lot of prejudice around graffiti some people consider a crime. Unfortunately no even in the Cuban Hip Hop festival graffiti has the place that it deserves. Pepe is one of the few artists that do graffiti, there is no money in it and even when sometimes he has to choose between do a graffiti or buy some basic stuff, he will choose the first in order to of bring his art close the people.

About K´bola Project

We started Kbolá project in 2012, we did this as a strategy to bring the attention of people from Cienfuegos city about certain socal issues. Lately young Cubans are tending to be more trivial, consumism behaviors and act of racism, these attitudes are become more “natural” due the popularity of reggeaton that reproduce this style of
life.
